When OPTrust, the pension fund trust of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, was heading to Japan to build strategic partnerships, they wanted the business gifts they were giving to be on par with the meticulous gift wrapping that is customary in Japan. The gifts they took needed to be understated and sophisticated, and represent Canada.
To create a refined Canadiana look, I combined two papers: ivory white embossed with a wood pattern, which I wrapped in a band around a rich red base paper. The woodgrain represented Canada’s natural landscape and the overall effect of the colour combination was reminiscent of the Canadian flag. Around the middle of the gifts, I knotted a double red grosgrain ribbon. Laser-cut wooden maple leaves and polar bears added a finishing detail that wouldn’t get damaged in transport.
The client was thrilled to present the gifts, and the recipients were uniformly impressed by their beauty and colour symbolism.
